Northern Virginia Writing Project Partners with Prince William County Public Schools

The Northern Virginia Writing Project is proud to partner with Prince William County Schools in a forty-hour Teacher Writing Institute during the fall of 2021.  A hybrid of online and face-to-face meetings, the Institute will serve forty teachers from PWCS middle and high schools.  During the Institute, teachers will create a professional development lesson, bringing together research on writing instruction and their own practices to share with other teachers.  They will also experience being a writer and working with a writing group of their fellow participants.  Throughout the semester, teachers will read about and discuss writing instruction theories, and reflect on how they use writing as a learning tool in their classes.  NVWP looks forward to welcoming and working with these future Teacher Leaders.

In partnership with NVWP, the Writers In The Schools program (WITS) pairs GMU MFA Fellows with area schools to teach creative writing both virtually and in-person. WITS MFA Fellows teach during school hours and in after school enrichment. Our programming focuses on expanding perspectives and empowering 21st century skills as students develop in the art of communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity. NVWP director, Leslie Goetsch (Lgoetsch@gmu.edu), and Graduate Admissions Coordinator, Holly Mason (Hmason2@gmu.edu), would be happy to talk with you more about bringing Mason WITS to Prince William County schools and classrooms—if interested in setting up a phone call or zoom for more information, please contact: Masonwritersintheschools@gmail.com.
